How I Doubled My Google Adsense Earnings

If you are reading my blog, you should notice an ad block from Google Adsense on every single one of my blog posts on the left. I didn’t double my earnings from experimenting with placement this time, nor did I mess with the color schemes of the ads, I took a different approach and that is by eliminating low paying advertisers.

I’ve been experiencing with Google Adsense’s new navigation features that are only available to publishers and have found that using the ‘Competitive Ad Filter’ and making use of the ‘Ad Review Center’ option, has doubled up my earnings from Google Adsense. If you are a webmaster, optimizing your advertisers list for Google Adsense to make sure no low paying advertiser is shown and the top paying advertiser ads are shown instead, is a must to increase your overall Adsense revenue. Taking this approach and eliminating low paying advertisers isn’t all that hard. It may take 30 minutes of your time but it is well worth your effort if you can double up or maybe triple up your earnings.

Using the Competitive Ad Filter

The main reason why Google incorporated this feature is for publishers to freely deny any advertiser they feel violates their web space at anytime. There could be many reasons. In this case, we will be using the competitive ad filter feature to filter out low paying advertiser sites from ever appearing on your ad block to maximize your earnings. To keep up to date with the lowest paying advertisers, I recommend copying the most recent low-paying advertiser list from AdsBlackList.com and adding it into your advertiser blacklist to prevent their ads from ever showing up. Although this may not make a noticeable difference, it contributes some level of optimization to filtering out the low paying advertisers from the high paying advertisers.

How to use the Ad Review Center feature

Before you select anything at all, realize that this is the most time consuming part which may require some level of research. However, also realize that this is the most important step into doubling or maybe even tripling your earnings with Google Adsense by taking the bar even higher and filtering out low paying advertisers in BULK.

Basically the idea is to optimize your Google ads by relevancy is by filtering out categories you feel is irrelevant to your website. Here is where the fun part begins. Besides trying to optimize your ad blocks to contain the most relevant ads, lets also take it up a notch and research which ads from each individual category is the most paying by using a friendly tool called SpyFu. Using this tool should give you some idea of the overall pay for each respective categories.

Your first step is to eliminate irrelevant ads from ever showing up by ticking the irrelevant categories that doesn’t suit your website. Now after you have done this, your second step is to research which leftover categories is top paying and you think may work with your readers. The reason why I say to do this is because you are only allowed to filter out 8 categories. What you are trying to obtain by following this practice is trying to find the most relevant and the most top paying ads, and by following this procedure, you do just that.

Allow and Block Google Certified Ad Networks feature

This is probably the most cruel part to maximizing your Adsense revenue and it does indeed require some hefty research. If you still can’t locate where this ‘Allow and Block Google Certified Ad Networks feature is, we are still on the same page. You can find this feature only if you scroll to the bottom of the page. Once you are there, you should see a nice long list of ad networks.

Basically your task like all the others is to eliminate small low-paying networks and to do that I usually hypothesize whether a network is low paying by checking the company’s Alexa Rankings. Anything above 100k, I block. Simple as that. The list can indeed be long, it took me 45 minutes to skim through them all however it was worth it. Ever since I made the change and blocked less known ad networks, I’ve seen a significant difference in my Adsense earnings per click. Think that your account may have gotten smart priced (smart priced – meaning penalized in earnings)? You may have thought wrong and it may be just because a lot of new low paying networks were interfering with the top paying networks.

If you think you are blocking too many ad networks, you probably aren’t. I currently block 40 less known ad networks and have set to block new certified ad networks automatically from appearing on my advertiser list unless I unblock it. This is to ensure that I keep top paying networks in and low paying networks out. It is as simple as that.

Now that I have covered some of the basics of blogging, now you can try out some ways to make money online with your blog. There are many ways to make money online but for the true success, you have to be patient and wait til your blog grows.

Blogging success depends on your visitors, the sort of your visitors and your technique. There are different money making techniques can be applied in blogging but the true success on each technique could be different among blogs.

Google adsense is the most easy way to make money from your blog. You just have to add the ad codes in your blog and wait for your visitors to click on them. For each valid click, you will make an amount of money.

Now that you have understand what is adsense and how it works, go to adsense.google.com and sign up for your free account. Fill out the required information like your name, address, website, phone number, zip code, country and other details and submit the form. Google will review your account and if they approve your account, you will get a confirmation email. This process may take 1-2 business days.

When your account is confirmed, now you are ready to add ads in your blog. You can get the ad codes from your adsense account and put it on your site but thats a messy job and I will tell this in the next update.

You can easily add, adsense via your blogger account. Just go to your blogger Dashboard and click on ‘layout.’

Now you can add/ change items on your blogger blog. Now click ‘add a page element‘ and select ‘Adsense‘ from there and click ‘Add to blog.’

Now all you need to have is to link your adsense account with blogger. Submit your adsense ‘User email‘, ‘Postal code‘ or ‘Phone number‘ and click ‘Sign in‘.

You will be signed in to your adsense account and there adsense will request your permission to link with blogger. Give the permission and now you can add your selected ads.

Use blogger’s nice interface to select colors of your ad. If you choose matching ads with your template, you will get more results.

Please remember that, you can add up to 3 ad units, one link list and 2 search bars in a single page.
Relevant ads will appear on your blog and you will paid for each valid clicks.
You cannot click your own ads in google or they will ban you.

AdSense for Feeds
In May 2005, Google announced a limited-participation beta version of AdSense for Feeds, a version of AdSense that runs on RSS and Atom feeds that have more than 100 active subscribers. According to the Official Google Blog, "advertisers have their ads placed in the most appropriate feed articles; publishers are paid for their original content; readers see relevant advertising—and in the long run, more quality feeds to choose from.

XHTML compatibility
As of September 2007, the HTML code for the AdSense search box does not validate as XHTML, and does not follow modern principles of website design because of its use of

non-standard end tags, such as and ,

presentational attributes other than id, class, or style — for example, bgcolor and align,
a table structure for purely presentational (i.e., non-tabular) purposes, and
the font tag.

1: using a table structure for unintended purposes is strongly recommended against by the W3C, but nevertheless does not cause a document to fail validation — there is currently no algorithmic method of determining whether a table is used "correctly" (for displaying tabular data or for displaying elements, that get proportionally wider or narrower when browser window resizes in width without active client side scripting).

Additionally, the AdSense advertisement units use the JavaScript method document.write(), which does not work correctly when rendered with the application/xhtml+xml MIME type. The units also use the iframe HTML tag, which is not validated correctly with the XHTML 1.0 Strict or XHTML 1.0 Transitional DOCTYPEs.
The terms of the AdSense program forbid its affiliates from modifying the code, thus preventing these participants from having valid XHTML websites.
However, a workaround has been found by creating a separate HTML webpage containing only the AdSense advertisement units, and then importing this page into an XHTML webpage with an object tag. This workaround appears to be accepted by Google.

How AdSense works

The webmaster inserts the AdSense JavaScript code into a webpage.
Each time this page is visited, the JavaScript code uses inlined JSON to display content fetched from Google's servers.
For contextual advertisements, Google's servers use a cache of the page to determine a set of high-value keywords. If keywords have been cached already, advertisements are served for those keywords based on the AdWords bidding system. (More details are described in the AdSense patent.)
For site-targeted advertisements, the advertiser chooses the page(s) on which to display advertisements, and pays based on cost per mille (CPM), or the price advertisers choose to pay for every thousand advertisements displayed.

Because the JavaScript is sent to the Web browser when the page is requested, it is possible for other website owners to copy the JavaScript code into their own webpages. Abuse
Some webmasters create websites tailored to lure searchers from Google and other engines onto their AdSense website to make money from clicks. These "zombie" websites often contain nothing but a large amount of interconnected, automated content (e.g., a directory with content from the Open Directory Project, or scraper websites relying on RSS feeds for content). Possibly the most popular form of such "AdSense farms" are splogs (spam blogs), which are centered around known high-paying keywords. Many of these websites use content from other websites, such as Wikipedia, to attract visitors. These and related approaches are considered to be search engine spam and can be reported to Google.
A Made for AdSense (MFA) website or webpage has little or no content, but is filled with advertisements so that users have no choice but to click on advertisements. Such pages were tolerated in the past, but due to complaints, Google now disables such accounts.
There have also been reports of Trojan horses engineered to produce counterfeit Google advertisements that are formatted looking like legitimate ones. The Trojan downloads itself onto an unsuspecting computer through a webpage and then replaces the original advertisements with its own set of malicious advertisements.

Criticism
Due to concerns about click fraud, 'Google AdSense' has been criticized by some search engine optimization firms as a large source of what Google calls "invalid clicks", in which one company clicks on a rival's search engine advertisements to drive up the other company's costs.
To help prevent click fraud, AdSense publishers can choose from a number of click-tracking programs. These programs display detailed information about the visitors who click on the AdSense advertisements. Publishers can use this to determine whether or not they have been a victim of click fraud. There are a number of commercial tracking scripts available for purchase.
The payment terms for webmasters have also been criticized. Google withholds payment until an account reaches US$100, but many micro content providers require a long time—years in some cases—to build up this much AdSense revenue. However, Google will pay all earned revenue greater than US$10 when an AdSense account is closed.

The short-form videos, shot close-up, were taken from interviews of more than 100 people talking about memorable moments.
By the end of 2008, Producer Rewards was considerably curtailed before being shut down completely due to a lack of demonstrable profitability. Once the Producer Rewards program closed, users like Kipkay switched their focus to YouTube.

Actually oDesk is more than a place for outsourcing, but a whole system for hiring and managing coders. It's rather techcentric. It's not the sort of thing that a client would enjoy managing (one does need to know how to spec a project in technical terms and how to speak to a developer). It's something for someone like me with one foot in the commercial realm and the other on the technical side. But to be honest I would probably have John do most of the developer management (depending on the project).

The decision about whether I would manage the project directly or not, would probably depend on whether John was already involved in that area of the business. Most of the SEO work is my direct province. To put someone between myself and the end developer would likely not improve matters. Most of the WordPress refinements and CMS (apart from the WYSIWYG editor and even that I've tried to hand off - but developers just don't understand WYSIWYG editors) are John's sphere. I am about to interview amother full-time developer locally with superb qualifications (finally!) this week. But if it doesn't work out or we need still more hands on deck, oDesk here we come! I will probably hire Russian and Ukrainian developers as I speak the language fluently. I don't really want to move to Tomsk (Vienna is quite nice, thank you!) to have to work with them. Without oDesk, you'd feel pretty cutoff. But with oDesk, I can live in Vienna and work in Tomsk a few days a week. Fantastic.

Some things I really like about oDesk apart from the system itself.

* Reasonable fees: oDesk takes a flat 10% fee. Small enough that nobody is really tempted to push them out of the middle. In exchange they provide a superb regulated environment.

* Transparency - you can get objective tested evaluations of most of the developers and you can even check out their personal sites and contact them off oDesk if you wanted to.

* Good design: unlike rentacoder.com, oDesk looks like it was meant to be used by people in attractive offices not tortured coders in industrial parks. As an ex-adman appearances are important to me.

* High rates for the providers. As a buyer that sounds like a crazy notion. But really I don't want to be hiring a developer for $2/hour. Not only would I not feel great about it. He will probably either not have the skills or do a shoddy job. oDesk gives really talented guys in Tomsk (who might like Tomsk - I've been to Irkutsk but not Tomsk) a fair shake at earning something like a Western wages. $10/hour ($9 after oDesk's cut) might not sound like much to you but it's a great wage for a programmer beyond the Urals or in Rumania. Expect to see some international programming stars rise out of oDesk.

I could even imagine that I would consider taking on an oDesker as a permanent programmer six months or year into the relationship. Who knows I might even move the guy to the West if that's what he really wanted and the commercial project justified the expense. Certainly, somebody who was doing regular work for Foliovision over six months would be more than welcome to visit home base for a couple of weeks, partly tourism and partly work.

My first experiences with freelancers began with Elance.com a year ago and I was never 100% satisfied. I tried hiring writers and link builders and none of those were really good.I also didn’t get that many bids for my posted projects. (maybe I was just unlucky…)

I decided to test GAF a few months ago with a few smaller projects like outsourcing ten articles or getting a few links to some of my niche websites.

There are two things that I really liked about GAF:

1. Many different bids

There are many more bidders here than on Elance especially for article writing.

Most of them also have lots of reviews which give you a good idea of their quality.

Many of these bidders also send you samples of their work so that you can get a feel for their writing style.

2. Very affordable prices

You can see in the picture above the average bid of $677 which was for 100 articles.

I often use Need-an-article.net for my articles but there is one disadvantage with them: You have to do your own research and supply the writer with the URL’s.

It typically takes me from 2 to 5 minutes of research for one article to come up with good URL’s from which the writer can extract relevant information for an article.

Doing that for 100 articles would take me 200 to 500 minutes!

Nothing like that is needed when you hire a writer on GAF. All you need is to supply them with keywords and your own SEO suggestions. (keyword in title, keyword density and so on.)

So this is a big time saver if you can get a good writer through GetAFreelancer.

How it works

If you are a buyer of services, you need to set up your account and then you can post your project.

Once you post it in the relevant categories, you’ll soon start to receive bids in your email and on the project page.

You can discuss details with every bidder through private messages. Once you choose one and they accept as well, you are given each other’s email addresses.

This means that from then on you don’t have to use GetAFreelancer private messaging but you can use personal emails or chat through Skype or Google chat which is very convenient.

If you offer services through GAF you can search for various projects by categories or by keywords.

The Payment system

GetAFreelancer offers you many methods of payment – through paypal, credit cards, Moneybookers and even E-Gold.

One neat system they have is the escrow system. Typically when someone accepts your project, they will ask you to transfer the money to escrow. This means that the money is now in GAF and not in your account and also not in your provider’s account.

You basically have paid but your provider hasn’t received the money yet. This protects both parties.

Once you receive the articles (or any other completed project) you can release the money from escrow and it is tranferred to the provider’s account.

My experiences

I did a few smaller test projects for 10 or 20 articles and hired a few writers. One of them was really good and she only bid $6 per article.

The articles were really good so I asked her if she would be willing to write 100 articles for me and I would offer her $8 per article. (for 600 to 800 words)

She agreed to work long term with me and I can say now that I have an excellent writer for the articles of my niche websites.

Of course, I don’t want to put all my eggs in the same basket so I am still testing other writers with smaller projects.

I am also testing a few link builders with smaller projects but I haven’t really done any big link building projects.

But looking at the number of bids and the number of reviews of bidders I can already see a lot of potential to find a quality link builder.

In summary

Since Chitika conveniently pays me through paypal (and my Chitika earnings still rock!) I use that money to fund my GAF projects.

So far I have been very satisfied with the GetAFreelancer system and of course with the providers I got through GAF.
